Day 2 – Lecturing Session and Foresthree Visitation

The second official day of SAMI 2019 started with lecturing session at 08.35 AM, presented by the Secretary of Halal Science Center, Dr. Noviyan Darmawan. The topic was about sustainability assessment and social acceptance of halal products. Firstly, Dr. Noviyan explained about the basic concept of halal and haram which we could find in Muslim rules (Qur’an and Hadits). The most famous thing about the halal industry is  food. For example, Muslim could not eat haram food such as pork, blood, animal which is not slaughtered in the Muslim way, and else. Dr. Noviyan also gave insights about Najis/dirty which categorized into light, medium, and heavy Najis. Muslim also has to consume Thoyyib things, which is good, such as good for Muslim’s health, body, and else. In fact, Halal is about sharia-compliant food safety and ethics. The halal industry is not only about halal food, but also halal travel, sharia finance, Muslim fashion, halal cosmetics, entertainment, and halal pharmaceutical. The halal industry is currently developing fast because of some factors such as awareness, increasing number of Muslims, and other reasons. Dr. Noviyan also gave some reasons that make Indonesia become the top 10 in the halal industry, such as tourism and food. To gain the halal certification in Indonesia, the business/company must do the registration through MUI, Fatwa Committee, and LPPOM MUI. IPB also has Halal Science Center which is basically a research center that also gives services such as technical assistant, training, and laboratory. The session was ended by the interactive Q n A.

After the first session, the participants got a chance to do a coffee break and enjoy some of the meals provided. After that, there was a second lecturing session which was conducted by Dr. Anggraini Sukmawati, MM. The topic was future skills in agriculture sectors: demand and strategy. Dr. Anggraini explained about some 21st-century skills which are important nowadays, especially in ICT world.
