Day 2 of The 9th SAMI 2026: Integrating Ecolabels, AI in Agriculture, and LCA for Sustainable Agrifood Resilience

Department of Management Faculty of Economics and Management IPB University held the second-day series of the Summer Course The 9th Sustainable Agrifood Management in Indonesia (SAMI) 2026 on Tuesday, July 28, 2026. The second day’s agenda, which was conducted online via Zoom Meeting, focused on strengthening the agrifood sector through the application of ecolabels, the application of AI technological innovations in agriculture, to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).

The series began at 08.00–09.30 WIB through Course 3 “Ecolabels and Climate Resilience in Blue Food Systems: Shrimp Aquaculture Case Study”. This session was moderated by Andita Ramadhanti, S.E., M.M.T. by presenting Ita Sualia from the School of the Environment, The University of Queensland, Australia. The speaker presented the application of life cycle assessment (LCA) and ecolabels in various environmental decision-making contexts, particularly in blue food systems such as black tiger prawn aquaculture. She emphasized that ecolabel certifications such as BAP, ASC, and GlobalGAP function as governance tools that connect small-scale farmers to premium export markets while promoting sustainable environmental standards.

The event continued at 10.30–12.00 WIB with Course 4 themed “Scale-up Sustainable Rice Farming through Fintech, AI, and New Production Systems”. This session was moderated by Dr. Andita Sayekti, S.T.P., M.Sc. as the moderator and presented Wirastanto as Country Head of RIZE Indonesia. In his presentation, Wirastanto reviewed various challenges in the transformation of rice farming in Indonesia, starting from the threat of climate change, resource scarcity, limited access to financing, to the phenomenon of aging farmers who are less tech-savvy. As a solution, RIZE developed an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based platform and digital applications used by field agronomists to assist farmers, monitor land conditions, and predict harvest times with precision. In addition, Wirastanto explained the application of the Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) method or periodic drying. The AWD method, which is carried out by drying the land twice per season, has been proven to cut methane gas emissions by up to 50 percent, save irrigation costs, and strengthen the root system of rice plants. RIZE also presents an interest-free concessional capital financing model and Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) scheme for farmers to cut long agricultural input supply chains and increase farmers’ net income by up to 15 percent.

Entering the afternoon session at 13.00–14.30 WIB, Course 5 presented Prof. Dr. Jutta Geldermann from University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany, with moderator Hafizi, S.Ak., M.Sc. Prof. Dr. Jutta Geldermann explored the material “The Varied Contexts of LCA and Environmental Decision Problems”. In her presentation, she explained how the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology is used to evaluate the environmental impact of the entire product life cycle starting from raw material extraction, production processes, to waste management. Prof. Dr. Jutta Geldermann emphasized the importance of integrating LCA with Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) to assist in complex decision-making when facing conflicts between economic, social, and environmental criteria. A case study from an agricultural biogas plant that utilizes waste, she demonstrated how this decision analysis framework can help managers and policymakers in choosing technologies that are the most environmentally friendly, efficient, and sustainable.

The entire series of events on this second day was hosted by Revina Novri Azahra as the Master of Ceremony alongside Safiandra Pasha who accompanied during the quiz session. And the SAMI 2026 program series will continue to present various strategic topics related to the development of sustainable agrifood management together with speakers from home and abroad.
